To celebrate the launch of our new book, we held a tree planting ceremony. Nine kowhai trees sponsored by nine daycares and Arataki school were planted at Pacific Park, Arataki. The centres got to have their tree for a time, decorate stars with wishes and could attend the planting ceremony if they choose. The children learned more about the two stars Hiwa-i-te-rangi (The wishing star) and Pohutakawa (The dedication star) during this exercise.
The morning of the planting was beautiful. Arataki school performed a prayer and song, and then each group helped to bury their stars and place dirt to help plant their tree.
When selecting the playground, I was shown three options to choose from. There was no question with the selection. By chance, the park was within walking distance to Arataki school and very close to 'Tania Grove' so it was meant to be. Tania, in our crew - works at Arataki school. The park selection has extra special meaning.
It has been a dream of mine for sometime to create a grove of kowhai, to encourage Tui to visit our playgrounds. I am so grateful for the support of everyone involved. Tauranga City Council were so supportive of the initiative, and much thanks goes out to Hemi from TCC who led this project.
